The new business is out of this world

Over the last couple of years I have discussed both in and out of class the benefits and the power of the Internet. There are several tools in the cyber world that allow users to become somebody they wish they could be.
One of the most prominent tools of this time is "Second Life." For those of you who don't know what it is, it is an online interactive software that allows users to create "avatars" (virtual characters) who live in a virtual world called Second life. Just like in real life these characters can purchase land, create their own house, buy clothes and any other product that you can imagine.
There has been an entire economy developed around Second Life (SL, as some articles call it). There are hundreds of businesses in Second Life, some of the most recognizable are:
  • Adidas
  • Nike
  • Nissan
  • Apple
Just like in the "real world," marketing stops for no-one and because so many people are tunning out mass media and joining Second Life, major companies have to adapt to these new trends and follow them. Companies that can afford it have a specific department dedicated to developing and running their Second Life stores.
The following is an example of what these stores look like,
Second life Apple Store

This is not only a good strategy for big business, it is an opportunity for small businesses to develop, as a matter of fact, some companies only exist in Second Life.
Second life is a powerful and interesting project that has become home to millions of users. It has been around for 5 years already and knowing how to live in it can only help your resume. So if you havent done so yet, I encourage you to visit the Second Life and give your life a second chance.
Here is a link to their website. You can thank me later.

I had no idea well established companies such as nike, adidas, apple, etc were involved with second life, but then again before last class I didnt even know it existed. Your post helped me to understand SL better, so thanks! :)

While SL might be a great advertising method for some companies, it might be a hindrance to others. Upon my recent arrival into the SL atmosphere, I find it very hard to even find stores. Now, it could be that I'm just a novice at this whole thing, but the only main advertising I've found is for other islands. Also, sometimes billboards have to be loaded over a long time in order to be seen. These are all turnoffs for me. So I don't know how effective SL will be for advertising in the long-run. I'm all for the First Life!

Wow, that's a huge suprise. I had no idea there was advertising in the virtual worlds. That's a huge step in advertising. I guess its not suprising that the companies involved in this are some of the richest companies who can afford to advertise to such a specific markets. I doubt many other companies will follow the companies who have already done this. Maybe some more tech companies though.

Second Life advertising for new businesses has a very large potential for success. Companies that are not yet on the market can test their products in the virtual world and see how popular different items are. New tech toys could be given a test run on the internet instead of spending a ton of money to put the product on the market even though there is a possibility the product could fail on the market.

I do not agree with Second Life because of the potential for people to be attached to their computers at all time. However, if companies can really put the program to good use by saving money, it could be worth it.

I agree with Jackie. You gave a nice summary of what SL is. I did however, want to know more about the companies that only exist on second life.
